It's Saturday - Let's Blog Hop!

Saturday, July 24, 2010

Ryker's mom over at http://rykerrules.blogspot.com/ is doing this blog hop and it's pretty cool.  What a fun way to find new blogs!  So I'm jumping in.

Bert: All right, I'll do it myself!
Mary Poppins: Do what?
Bert: Bit o' magic!
Michael: A bit of magic?
Bert: It's easy! Let's see... You think. You wink. You do a double blink. You close your eyes... and jump!
[They jump onto the drawing, nothing happens]
Jane: Is something s'posed to happen?
Mary Poppins: Bert, what utter nonsense!
[gives an exasperated sigh]
Mary Poppins: Why do you always complicate things that are really quite simple? Give me your hand please, Michael. Don't slouch. One... two...
[They jump into the chalk picture]

Almost Back in Order

Thursday, May 27, 2010

I've been away from blogging since "The Great Flood" while we get the house back in order. It's almost there. Yippee! It almost feels like a whole new house!

In the meantime, the Aussies are doing great. Penny had her vet's appointment last week and the vet claimed she is in perfect health. . .except she's a little. . .umm. . . fluffy? OK, Dr V said she was fat. Well, she fits right in with us, right? We're all a little fluffy in my house these days. I can't help but share yummy table scraps with my beautiful fur babies.

Plus we haven't been going on the long walks we usually do, and McDonald's has amazing sweet tea for 99 cents! (Before you freak out, I do not feed the dogs sweet tea! I was merely trying to point out that I succumb to temptation of sweet tea pretty easily, and therefore I have become a bit fluffy too these days, lol).

That's not to say we aren't walking at all. I would never do that to my sweet pups! It's just that a usual 1 hour walk has been shortened to about 20 minutes. I promised Dr. V we'd all make more of an effort to get back on track.

I'm noticing more good things in Penny. She's coming to my husband when he calls her. Before she seemed more nervous around him than anyone else, but she's decided he's OK, especially when he's got a chicken nugget for her. (You see my point about fluffy?)

She now comes and lays down with us when we watch TV at night, where before she'd stay under the kitchen table. She was always close to us, but she seemed to like the cover of the table. But the best thing is that she doesn't immediately hop and run away when you walk by her. Before she'd hop up and move away when any of us walked by. We've all been on the same page about totally ignoring her as we walk by, and it seems to be working because she's starting to realize that no one is going to hurt her.

So these are all good thing. Ninja, of course, will lay right in front of you with his belly in the air so you have to practically jump over him. I guess that's a relaxed, confident dog!

I love to hear the two of them play in the yard. They bark and snarl and chase each other around and it is so cute!

I'm hoping this weekend to go for a nice walk and take lots of pictures. Happy Memorial Day weekend!

The Best Laid Plans. . . and News!

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

My neighbor told me about this really neat wildlife preserve close to our home with lots of trails and great places for dogs so I headed out right after work. I checked the website earlier and it said they were open until 8pm. Perhaps those are Summer hours, and even though it is warming up, it's still the tail end of a Southern California Winter, and the park closed at 4:30. How disappointing! We'll have to save that for a weekend trip.

We ended up at a local dog park and of course I forgot the camera in the car, and since we had to park a half a mile away I gave up. There was a grumpy husky who was terrorizing everyone so we didn't stay long. What's with owners who don't correct their dogs? "They're just playing" doesn't cut it with me when every time this dog "plays" the other dog growls and snaps at him. That's dog speak for "Knock it off!"

My news is something exciting, but I almost hate to write it in case it doesn't work out. But here goes! I'm meeting with a couple this weekend who are looking for a new family for their 1 year old female mini Aussie. Apparently the kids are leaving for college and the parents are working a lot, and they feel like the pup would be better with a family with another dog and a people who had time for her. I'm so excited- I can't even tell you!

Last year I found a red merle Aussie female at the local animal shelter, and rushed over, only to find she'd been adopted the day before. I got in the car and cried. Isn't that silly? I've been waiting for the right pup to come along. I thought I might wait for the breeder where we got Ninja to have another litter of pups. . . but taking in a young Aussie that needs a home would be great too. I hope that the two will see each other and it will be like music playing and they are inseparable from that moment on. It's a nice dream, isn't it? I just want them to be happy. Ninja loves other dogs and apparently so does this other pup.

I've also been looking into sheep herding. There is a local group where you can take your dog and let them herd sheep. How cute would that be? Apparently it's quite a work out for the owners too. I guess you get run over by the sheep from time to time. I'm sure my husband will bring the video camera to catch his wife being knocked over by sheep while the dog (or hopefully dogs) run wild, nipping at the sheep. I'm sure we'll be on YouTube in about 30 seconds after it happens!

So wish me luck about the new Aussie. I can't wait until Saturday. I'm like a little kid who can't wait for something to happen. :)

Nothing Much New to Report

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

I was always told that two years old was the magic number for a mini Aussie. I guess it's true because my wild, chewing everything he can find puppy has turned into a wonderful adult dog. He grew out of the submissive urinating all over my husband (thank heavens!) and he rarely takes anything out in the yard that he shouldn't have these days. He did nab the paper towel I used to drain tacos on the other night. I guess it smelled good to him, but at least it was out of the trash and not while there was food on it.

There is one funny thing I've accidentally trained him to do. I say accidentally because it started off as a game and now I believe Ninja thinks this is what he's supposed to do. That's accidental training, LOL.

When I let him off leash at the dog park he runs at me, growls ferociously, and hip checks me. He's about 45 pounds now, so I have to pay attention or I'll be flattened. To anyone watching it looks like I'm being attacked! When I correct him he stops immediately, but it looks so funny and sounds so viscous, but if you look closely that little behind is wagging as fast as it can go.

As I type this Ninja is curled up at my feet, probably hoping well head to the dog park at any moment. As Martha would say, It's a good thing.

Ninja the Super Hero

Sunday, February 1, 2009

Just before Ninja used his X-ray vision . . .

Don't you love it when you catch the red eyes of your dog? It's a little eerie looking.

My husband says this is a picture of the "Devil Dog." Devil Dogs are something you eat, not a behavior.

I think he looks like a super hero ready to use his eyes to melt the bad guy. :)

What a Week. . .

I have this crazy puppy named Ninja. When he was born, his human parents saw that he was almost all black and named him Ninja. When all the other puppies were adopted they were renamed, but when I first saw him, he was Ninja, and as I dreamed about bringing him home, he was always Ninja to me. So that's his name. He lives up to it when he climbs on the black couch (which is strictly forbidden, but he conveniently forgets that.) If he lays on his white tummy, tucks his white paws under, and closes his eyes, you just don't see him there.

The first day of Puppy Training the other adopted parents asked me what his "new" name was. He's just Ninja. Some of them looked at me like I was crazy, but that's his name. Eight months later I think I should have named him Mischief.

I'm stating this blog to document the crazy and wonderful things this pup does. This week has been more on the crazy side and a lot less on the wonderful. I think I'll make separate entries for the actual episodes, but suffice it to say that we have dealt with a most unwelcome rat moving in (and apparently befriended by the pup), Ninja escaping and being chased by a very irate dog catcher (think back to old cartoons and you'll get the idea), and Ninja eating rat poison. Don't worry- we caught it in time and he is OK, thankfully or this would have been a very short blog.

I'll tell you the story of how he came to live with us. It's a good beginning point.

My friend at work invited me and my family to lunch one day, innocently stating we could come visit and see the puppies that had been born a few weeks prior. There was nothing innocent about this as I learned later, although her intentions were the best. I have never had a dog before, but who doesn't love puppies? Sure, they are cute and it would be fun. So off we went on a hot Saturday in late July of last year.

Thirteen Mini Aussie puppies greeted us (as well as the Momma and a sibling from the first litter), and I fell for a large, almost all black puppy named Ninja. He looked like a little bear, and he was so much bigger than his siblings that he would just hip check them out of the way. He would block the dog door by laying half in and half out of it. This pup had me at the first yelp.

The whole trip home I went on and on about this puppy, and my husband reminded me that they were very expensive, and if I really wanted a dog, we should go to the pound and save one. Good guy, my hubby, but I wanted THIS dog.

For the next few weeks I dreamed about this little black tri puppy, with his big eyes and his pretty copper eyebrows and his white tummy. It got worse as my friend's husband brought a couple of the puppies in to work to visit and, of course, there was Ninja cuter than ever. I snuggled him and coworkers asked, "Oh, is he yours?" Still, I couldn't afford the asking price so I sadly said no.

Finally, just about the time they were ready to be adopted and deposits had been made for nearly all of them, I went to my friend and told her I could not live without this puppy. Is there an arrangement we could make? Can I make payments for 10 years? How can I give this baby a wonderful home? She laughed and said that she wanted a dollhouse for her niece for Christmas, and, knowing that I build and collect dollhouses, if I would build her a nice dollhouse I could have the puppy. I was rather floored. You're asking me to do what I love to do most in the world to get what I want most in the world? Umm, yes. That would be fine.

I discovered later that she had wanted him for me the whole time, had "talked down" other potential adoptive parents, even going so far as hiding him in her room when people came to look at the puppies. You see, she likes her friends to get the puppies because then she can see them all the time. She had been afraid in the beginning that no one would want Ninja because he is a bit big for a mini, and has the "wrong" face for showing. But when she saw me bond with him, she knew he was taken care of.

A week later he was delivered to my arms and came home with us. At Christmas I delivered a lovely pink dollhouse, fully decorated with lights, for my friend's niece.

The fun really began when he came home, and our adventures will be shared here. Some of them are a lot more fun than others. . .
